Intertrigo and Babies

Understanding and Managing Intertrigo in Babies

As a mother, you're always on the lookout for anything that might cause discomfort to your baby. One common issue that many parents encounter is intertrigo. This blog will help you understand what intertrigo is, its complications, and effective ways to treat and prevent it, ensuring your baby stays happy and healthy.

What is Intertrigo?

Intertrigo is a rash that occurs in skin folds, where the skin rubs against itself, leading to inflammation. It is common in babies, especially in areas like the neck, armpits, groin, and behind the knees. The primary cause of intertrigo is moisture trapped in these folds, which can result from sweat, drool, or milk.

Complications of Intertrigo

While intertrigo itself is uncomfortable, it can lead to more severe complications if not managed properly. The warm, moist environment in skin folds is ideal for fungal and bacterial infections to develop. These infections can cause increased irritation, redness, and discomfort for your baby.

Treating Intertrigo and Preventing Infections

The key to treating and preventing intertrigo is to keep the affected areas dry and clean. Here are some effective strategies:

  1. Keep the Area Dry: After cleaning, make sure to dry the skin folds thoroughly. You can use a soft towel or allow the skin to air dry.    HOT TIP: Keep a stash of flannels on the change table.
  2. Coconut Oil and Tea Tree Bath: Adding a few drops of coconut oil and tea tree oil to your baby's bath can help keep the skin moisturised while preventing bacterial and fungal growth.
  3. Use Rolly Balm: Rolly Balm is an excellent solution for managing intertrigo. It contains zinc, which helps to dry out the area, and tea tree oil, which has antifungal and antibacterial properties. The inclusion of tallow in Rolly Balm is beneficial because it is similar to human skin, making it gentle and effective.
  4. Tummy Time: Giving your baby tummy time can help separate the skin folds in the neck, reducing the chances of moisture being trapped.
  5. Avoid Overheating: Dress your baby in breathable fabrics like merino wool, which can help regulate body temperature and reduce sweating.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage and prevent intertrigo related infections in your baby. Keeping the skin dry and using products like Rolly Balm can help ensure your baby remains comfortable and happy.

If you notice persistent or severe symptoms, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional for further advice.
